Jávea

Jávea lies 80 kilometres to the northeast of Alicante between the towns of Denia and Altea. The town has three parts: the old town, the harbour and the sandy beach at Jávea, El Arenal.

The lighthouses of Cap San Antoni in the north and Cap La Nau in the south mark out the boundaries of the municipality of Jávea (Xàbia). The 753-metre high Montgó mountain shelters Jávea from the northern winds. The Gorgos river runs through the fertile agricultural valley that crosses from east to west. Jávea enjoys a temperate climate all year round. The average annual temperature is 17.5°. In the summer, the easterly wind blows a refreshing sea breeze inland. The municipality covers an area of 68.4 km2. The traditional architecture, the medieval chapels and the remainders of old windmills accentuate the beautiful Jávea landscape.

Jávea has had an eventful past. The moors left their knowledge of agriculture behind, while the Christian occupation built walls up around the old, medieval city. The structure of the old city has remained almost completely intact. The ring roads and old city walls circle the beautiful historic centre with its narrow streets and white houses with gothic arches.

Jávea of course also means the sea. The silhouettes of fishing boats on the horizon that sail into the harbour, the aroma of fresh fish, the traditional auction... Jávea harbour still preserves the true tradition of the Mediterranean.

Jávea equals nature. The Montgó nature reserve surrounds Jávea and Denia and is an impressive mass of rock that reaches a height of 753 m above sea level. Here resides a wealth of flora and fauna, with some very special species of plants that only grow in this habitat. Thanks to the many archaeological remains, this area was designated as a nature reserve on the 16th of March 1987, making this mountain a fantastic area for walking. From the top of the mountain, there is a splendid view over Jávea and in clear weather you can see Ibiza.

Along Jávea's 25-kilometre long stretch of coastline there is always something to experience! Arenal is the best beach for families and has all sorts of facilities such as sports, showers and baths for the disabled. The restaurants and cafes, popular local festivals, the night life, sea and splendid dawn complete the picture.

Jávea is a superb spot for water sports. Sailing, deep-sea fishing, wind surfing, jet skies, snorkelling, diving or hiring a boat, too much to mention! Above all, Jávea has many sport clubs where other sports can be enjoyed, like horse riding, tennis, football, golf as well as hunting.
